Amanda Glass is an Equal Justice Works Legal Fellow at the Arizona Center for Disability Law. With support from her sponsor, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, Amanda is working to improve access to special education and mental health services for children in Arizona’s foster care system through direct client services, community trainings, systemic advocacy, and collaboration with other Arizona organizations. Her VOICES training will cover the laws that impact students with disabilities in foster care and will provide advocacy strategies for ensuring each student gets the services they need to be successful. Topics of discussion will include the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Every Student Succeeds Act. The training will also outline challenges faced by students with disabilities in foster care, including placement in the least restrictive environment, identifying the child’s special education decision maker, school stability, and school discipline. CASAs will be provided with a variety of tools that can be used both in and out of the courtroom to advocate for their children.
